The EF 2x does reduce effectiveness of AF, but it can still deliver keepers. The big superzooms can't deliver competitive IQ and the f6.3 aperture will affect AF as much as the 2x does on the 300/2.8.

I am doing bird photography. I am very happy with my Canon EF 400mm f4 DO IS ii in combination with Extender EF 1.4x iii and EF 2x iii. I am considering an upgrade of my Canon 7D ii and see only the Canon R5 as an upgrade option. My question is if anyone has experience or has read about others' experiences with the combination R5 and EF 400mm
